Directive 8020 follows the same save model as every Dark Pictures game: one autosave, no rewinds. If a character dies you cannot reload to undo it — the run continues without them. It's the franchise's signature mechanic and the reason why early choices feel so weighty.
Save rules
- One autosave per save slot.
- Autosave triggers between scenes, not before QTEs.
- You cannot manually save mid-chapter on the canonical run.
- Chapter-select unlocks after the credits roll, with full state at the start of every chapter.
- Curator's Cut uses a separate save slot.
- Cloud saves are supported on PS5 / Steam.
When can characters die?
| Episode | First lethal moment |
|---|---|
| 1 — Cassiopeia | None — prologue is non-lethal. |
| 2 — Tau Ceti F | Variant chase QTE (rare). |
| 3 — Quarantine | First true permadeath gate (interrogation branch). |
| 4 — Vital Signs | Power-surge QTE — Thomas at risk. |
| 5 — The Hold | Loadlifter chain — Naomi or Riley. |
| 6 — Bearings | None — exploration chapter. |
| 7 — Last Transmission | Defensive waves — anyone. |
| 8 — Directive | Final boss QTE — anyone, including Brianna. |
How to mitigate permadeath
- Bank +1 trust per character early — every check has a higher floor.
- Scan all premonitions to pre-empt the QTE you're about to face.
- Use a wired controller for Episode 5 — latency is the #1 cause of accidental deaths.
- If a death feels unfair, finish the run; chapter-select fixes it.
FAQ
Does Directive 8020 have permadeath?
Yes. Once a playable character dies they're permanently removed from the rest of the run. You cannot reload a manual save mid-chapter; only the autosave persists.
Can you reload after a character dies in Directive 8020?
No. The single auto-save commits death at the moment it happens. To replay a section you must finish the current run and then use chapter-select.
Does Directive 8020 have manual saves?
No mid-chapter manual saves. Each chapter has a single autosave. After completing the campaign once, chapter-select lets you re-enter any chapter at full state.
