Directive 8020 Tips & Tricks

Twelve essential Directive 8020 tips. Wired controllers, premonition routing, trust banking, QTE handling and the save-everyone shortcuts you'll wish you knew before Episode 5.

Directive 8020 is a knowledge-check game. Most first-playthrough deaths come from three or four mistakes people make in Episodes 2–5 that the game never warns you about. Below are 12 tips ranked by impact — read the first six before you start.

12 essential tips

#TipWhy it matters
1Use a wired controllerEpisode 5's loadlifter QTE chain has zero margin for wireless input lag. The single biggest cause of first-playthrough crew loss.
2Scan EVERY glowing promptPremonitions cap at 17 and missing one voids the Foreseen trophy. They also unlock Ending A eligibility — never skip.
3Bank +1 trust early, not lateTrust gains are biggest in Episodes 1–3 when stakes are still low. Trying to recover trust in Ep 6–7 is impossible.
4Send Riley up the antenna ridgeEpisode 2 branch. Riley is the better climber; sending Naomi up locks her into the lethal Ep 5 rescue slot.
5Scan order = Akin → Naomi → Riley → ThomasEpisode 3 quarantine sequence. Wrong order exposes the wrong crew member and burns trust permanently.
6Pick 'Tell Thomas the truth'Episode 4. Trades a story-beat reveal for +2 trust — required for the Ep 4 confession scene and Ending A eligibility.
7Triage Naomi → Riley → AkinEpisode 4. The only sequence that doesn't drop any trust score below the survival threshold.
8Crouch, never vaultEpisode 5 stealth. Vaulting alerts the variant; the chase that follows can kill any character with you.
9Throw the wrench, not the breakerEpisode 5. The breaker triggers sparks that reveal your position. Wrench is the safe diversion.
10'Believe' the premonitions in Ep 6Required for Ending A. 'Dismiss' permanently locks you out of the canonical good ending.
11Save before Episode 7 manuallyChapter-select reloads everything from Ep 7 — make this your platinum save state for ending mop-up.
12Pick 'Reveal' in Episode 8 for Ending ASacrifice = Ending B (Brianna dies). Escape = Ending C/D. Reveal = Beacon (best ending).

Bonus — what NOT to do

  • Don't activate Movie Night for your first run. It splits QTE inputs and complicates save-everyone routing.
  • Don't shoot the suspected variant in Episode 3. Wait for proof — shooting wrong kills an innocent crew member instantly.
  • Don't side with the crew over Akin in Episode 4 if you want Ending B eligibility.
  • Don't skip the Curator's Episode 6 monologue — it's the only unlock for the Behind the Curtain trophy.
  • Don't fail Episode 4's power-surge QTE. Stage 2 kills Thomas immediately; there's no recovery.

FAQ

What is the most important tip for Directive 8020?

Use a wired controller. Episode 5's loadlifter QTE chain has zero margin and is the single biggest reason first-playthrough save-everyone routes fail.

How do I avoid mistakes on my first playthrough?

Bank +1 trust with every protagonist in Episodes 1–4, scan all 17 premonitions, send Riley up the Ep 2 ridge, and crouch the Ep 5 stealth section. These four habits cover 80% of common deaths.

Should I play Safe Mode?

Yes if you want zero stress. Safe Mode auto-passes non-lethal QTEs and extends lethal prompt windows by ~4x. It does not block trophies on any platform.
