The Variant

The variant in Directive 8020 — what the shape-shifting threat actually is, how it imprints on hosts, how to detect it and the final boss fight.

The variant is Directive 8020's central threat — a memetic shape-shifting biomass that wears the faces of the people it absorbs. It is not a single creature; it is closer to a fungal hive linked through the Tau Ceti f surface. The Cassiopeia inadvertently brings a piece of it home in Episode 2.

How the variant works

  • Imprint — touches a host, absorbs neural pattern over ~20 seconds.
  • Replicate — grows a body plan matching the host within hours.
  • Memory bleed — host memories leak back through Bearings tools as premonitions.
  • Queen form — the final boss in Episode 8, the original biomass nucleus.

Detection methods

  1. Episode 3 scan order — Akin → Naomi → Riley → Thomas exposes the variant.
  2. Voice latency — variant dialogue lags by one frame during cut-scenes.
  3. Bearings glow — Bearings tool pulses when within 2m of a variant.

FAQ

How do you kill the variant?

Individual variant copies can be killed with conventional weapons; the queen-form in Episode 8 needs the boss QTE chain. To permanently contain the variant you need Ending A or B.

Can you tell who is the variant?

Episode 3's scan order (Akin → Naomi → Riley → Thomas) is the canonical detection method. Outside of that, listen for delayed comm static during dialogue — the variant's voice lags by one frame.
